For product pictures, keep the real product real. Photograph the actual item, then use AI to make the background or scene. Never use AI to show something the product cannot do. Check every image at full size and export the right sizes for each place.

For each place it is used

Product and commercial images are where AI pays for itself fastest. They are also where honesty matters most. Customers decide to buy from pictures, so those pictures must show what they will receive. This lesson covers using AI for backgrounds, lifestyle scenes, mockups and ad creative, while keeping the product itself truthful. It also covers getting the files technically right for web and print.

Three ways to use AI in product work

Generate around a real photo. Photograph the real product on a plain backdrop, remove the background, and place it into AI-made scenes. The product stays accurate, and the world around it is new.
Edit a real photo. Remove blemishes, extend the canvas to make room for text, change the background, adjust the light and remove distractions. Keep edits to what a normal retoucher would do.
Generate concepts and mockups. Packaging ideas, ad concepts and mood boards, made before anything is manufactured. Label them as concepts, not product photos.

⚠Do not use an AI image to show a product's real look, size, material or performance. If the picture is not the real item, the listing is misleading. That can break advertising rules and marketplace policies, and it leads to returns and complaints.

A reliable pipeline

1. SHOOT   Phone or camera, soft even light, plain backdrop, several angles, accurate color.
2. CUT     Remove the background (AI cut-out tools are good; check edges, hair, glass, shadows).
3. SCENE   Generate backgrounds/lifestyle scenes with matching light direction and perspective.
4. COMP    Composite the real product into the scene; add a believable contact shadow + reflection.
5. MATCH   Match color temperature, grain and contrast so the product doesn't look pasted on.
6. CHECK   Compare product color/proportions to the real item; zoom 100% for halos and artifacts.
7. EXPORT  Variants per channel (marketplace white-background, website hero, social 1:1 and 9:16).

Make the scene empty and add the real product afterwards. That gives you control, and it keeps the picture truthful. If a tool offers product placement from a reference photo, check the result against the real product before you use it commercially.

Ad creative

Make a set of variations in angle, background and color mood, and let performance data pick the winners. Testing creative is where fast generation shines.
Leave safe zones for the platform's own interface and for text. Keep the key content inside them.
Follow each ad platform's rules on synthetic or altered images, and disclose where required.
Do not make fake before-and-after results, fake reviews, or realistic people who endorse something they never did.

Technical delivery

Web: use sRGB. Use JPG or WebP for photos, PNG for transparency or graphics, and SVG for logos and icons. Compress them, and export at 1x and 2x for sharp screens.
Print: ask for the printer's specs. Expect about 300 dpi at final size, the right bleed, and conversion to the required color profile, often CMYK. Colors will shift, so proof them.
Marketplaces: each has rules for size, background and content. Check them before you make a catalog.
File hygiene: meaningful names, version numbers, and a folder structure the client can find their way around.

A checklist for every image

Zoom to 100 percent. Look for bent edges, melted details, extra fingers, and impossible shadows or reflections.
Is the product accurate in color, proportions and features?
Is any text or logo wrong, or generated by accident?
Does it look too much like a real person, brand or artwork?
Does it meet the platform's specs and policies?
